Designing for Tomorrow: Collage’s Commitment to Environmental Stewardship

In the Works

Back to News & Insights

At The Collage Companies, environmental stewardship isn’t a once-a-year conversation, it’s a core principle embedded in how we approach Design Build, construction management, and community partnerships. From sustainable materials and energy-efficient systems to thoughtful site planning and resilient construction practices, Collage believes that the buildings we create today must serve both people and the planet tomorrow.

Our Design Build approach allows us to integrate environmental strategy from day one aligning owners, architects, engineers, and builders around shared sustainability goals. The result? Smarter buildings. Lower lifecycle costs. Reduced environmental impact. And facilities that educate and inspire future generations. This Earth Day, we’re proud to spotlight three projects that reflect our commitment to building responsibly.

Climate First Bank – A Model for Sustainable Banking

As Florida’s first FDIC-insured, values-based community bank focused on environmental sustainability, Climate First Bank set out to redefine what a financial institution could look like. Collage was honored to partner on a facility designed to align with the bank’s mission of combating climate change through sustainable finance. The building incorporates environmentally responsible materials, energy-conscious systems, and operational efficiencies that reflect Climate First Bank’s broader environmental commitment. This project exemplifies how mission-driven organizations can extend their purpose into the very walls they occupy proving that sustainable design is both practical and powerful.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park – Interpretive Center & Aquarium

Located in Key Largo, the park encompasses approximately 70 nautical square miles of protected waters, offering visitors a rare glimpse into Florida’s living coral reef ecosystem. Guests explore the reefs via glass-bottom boat tours, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, and educational exhibits. The park’s visitor center features large saltwater aquariums, nature films, and interpretive displays that highlight marine life and conservation efforts.

Collage is proud to be selected by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection as Construction Manager for the new 20,619-square-foot Interpretive Center and Aquarium complex. This transformative project includes:

  • Immersive educational exhibits
  • A state-of-the-art saltwater aquarium system
  • Landside and marineside construction within an active state park
  • Phased development to minimize environmental disruption

Building within a sensitive coastal ecosystem requires precision, planning, and deep respect for the surrounding environment. From marine coordination to erosion control and resilient materials, every phase is approached with stewardship in mind. This is more than construction. It is infrastructure that supports conservation, education, and long-term environmental protection.

This Earth Day on April 22nd, The Florida State Parks Foundation joined Florida State Parks, the Friends of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, and several community partners to commemorate the occasion. Once complete, the multimillion-dollar facility, funded from public and private sources, will foster new connections between park visitors, Florida’s Coral Reef and the abundant native wildlife that lives in and around it.

Flagler County Visitor Eco-Discovery Center

The planned Flagler County Visitor Eco-Discovery Center represents a forward-thinking investment in environmental education and sustainable tourism. Approved by the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners, the state-of-the-art facility is designed to help visitors and residents explore the county’s natural, historical, cultural, and recreational resources. The initiative aims to expand tourism beyond the beaches while preserving ecological integrity and promoting responsible environmental practices.

Key goals include:

  • Implementing best practices for ecological design
  • Protecting native habitats and species
  • Enhancing awareness of Flagler County’s natural landscapes
  • Providing educational and high-quality recreational opportunities

As this project moves forward, it will stand as a model for how civic development can celebrate and safeguard natural resources at the same time.

Designing with the Future in Mind

Environmental stewardship in construction goes beyond energy-efficient lighting or recycled materials. It means:

  • Planning for resilience in coastal and sensitive environments
  • Reducing lifecycle costs through smarter systems
  • Collaborating early through Design-Build to embed sustainability into project DNA
  • Supporting mission-driven organizations that prioritize conservation and education

At The Collage Companies, we believe buildings can do more than serve their immediate purpose, they can teach, protect, conserve, and inspire. This Earth Day, we reaffirm our commitment to building responsibly, innovatively, and sustainably — creating spaces that honor both community and environment.
