Amtrak passengers in Picayune, Mississippi now have a brand new ADA compliant platform that will be used for getting on and off trains. The 400-foot lighted structure is linked to the city’s past and future, as passengers now have three ramps heading off the platform to Picayune’s Intermodal Transportation Center. “I’m a Mississippi kid. I’ve been with Amtrak for 15 years, and I can remember coming here as a kid in 1982, and for those of you that have been here that long you’ll know this simple description. It was a parking lot.” said Todd Stennis, Amtrak representative.
The Collage Companies (Collage) provided general contracting services for the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (AMTRAK) to lead ADA compliant construction to the new Amtrak passenger platform in Picayune, Mississippi. This project is part of Amtrak’s ADA Station Program, which is a massive nationwide undertaking to bring all Amtrak stations across the country up to standard with the American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA). A ribbon-cutting was held on September 23rd, attended by Collage Vice President of Operations and COO, Rob Maphis who says of the significance of the project: “Rail travel has been an important part of this nation’s past. Our work at this station will allow this tradition to continue, providing for upgraded accessibility and an improved passenger experience when boarding Amtrak’s trains. We are truly honored to be one of only eight builders nationally working as part of Amtrak’s ADA stations program to help serve America’s railway passengers.”
